Recruiting The Next Generation

I'm happy doing what I do, but many times the other side of the fence comes a calling via recuiters.

So, today I got another call directly from a client of a recruiter that has been checking in on me time to time. I was going to meet him (yes, a Boomer) about a month ago - but the recuiter forgot to tell me the meeting was off. I called him on his cell phone, and he said: "Well, I'm putting my Father-In-Law in the ground right as we speak..."

Wow. Sheesh. What a wrenching situation to be in. I apologized quickly and we hung up. I promptly got his family a sympathy card, as I felt for him since I recently spoke at a dear friends' funeral and still feel the sting of his death.

Death, grief, mourning, and berievement. These things are common to the human condition, no matter what generation you are in. Our phone conversations since have been relaxed and personal, devoid of professional chatter and posturing. How refreshing changes like this come from the experience of death is a mystery, but a hopeful mystery.

Leveraging common understandings and compassion can bring many positive things to each generation.

Boomer Breakfast Conversations...

I've been in this nice free WiFi enabled Breakfast spot since 6AM this morning, and the majority of the patrons have been Boomers. Who am I? I am actually a "Tweener" - born smack between Boomer and X Generations.

I've been listening, yes, eavesdropping on conversations between Boomers for a few years now. I know that for my continued survival in the business world, I need to know how they think. More importantly, it also helps me better understand my parents in general.

Personally, I've found it difficult befriending Boomers in public. Playing tennis with Boomers at the courts down the street sometimes helps get conversations going - but I'm ok with listening and learning when I must...

Today, a group of older Boomers (3 women, 2 men) have been talking about the following topics:

1) Money - Retirement funds
2) Money - Senior Discounts for 55 and over
3) Home - Repair projects and costs involved
4) Customer Service - Frustrations in general with various customer service reps
5) Health Issues - Friends with brain tumors, healthcare costs, Etc.

More again soon...

Baby Boomers & XYZ Generations: Let's Talk

Hello All,

Well, an 18 year old Aussie already snapped up the Blog name called:
"http://boomers.blogspot.com" - I suppose it just goes to show we need to explore the ways intergenerational communications occur, or for that matter, how they do not occur...

Open communications and developing respect, understanding, tolerance, and hopefully trust will be a critical factor in years to come in both the personal and professional realms, when (USA) Baby Boomers are retiring in ever increasing numbers - when Boomers and each XY & Z generation will be ever more dependent on each other.

Let's Talk!
